Training Days

“Attending the training days always makes me extremely apprehensive, because I know I'm not anywhere near the level of other people, and no one wants to be at the back every time do they.. But I've realised that to get better that is actually what I need to do!

That aside, I've found them really informative and well organised, and have enjoyed speaking to other people about their training. Yesterday was great. If I hadn't been there I wouldn't have learnt anything about riding in a group, I've never done it before and it scared me. It was especially good to be with people of a similar ability as I didn't feel I was holding people up, and I also appreciated your help.

I thought the physio was brilliant; he made what he was saying sound really interesting, and he really knew his stuff. I spoke to him briefly at the end about some pain I've got in my shins and he told me straight away what he thought it was, and how to help myself with it. If I got injured again I'd go to him definitely. Also looking forward to the nutrition information next month, I did want to ask about it, obviously doing long distance it's important, and because of my hypo episodes it's vital I get it right.

I enjoy the sessions, think you and Simon work really hard to make them inclusive for everyone, so Thanks. :) “

“Thank you for yesterday,  I feel like I am beginning to 'get it' with the drills. The weekend in Derbyshire helped hugely and yesterday reinforced things. I used to find the drills really difficult – I was almost fighting with them, but now I am much more relaxed doing them and its not just through repetition, it is because you keep re-iterating the purpose of the drills and you relate them to running. The same with Carl's approach of not 'cheating' - I fully understood what he was getting at yesterday and it makes it so much easier to focus on the exercise/drill. So, all in all, I got a lot out of that session.

I was happy biking – loved doing the chain gang  and felt really happy about getting my head down on Oxton Hill. That is the point that I would have felt like giving up before. It was fun being in a big group with nice people.”

“I really enjoyed Saturday and looking forward to the following one day session planned.

I find them extremely helpful for my training. Its also nice to train with other people and also get some feedback from yourself.”

“Think these training days are really good and nice to meet everybody and catch up, good to train in the pool with everybody and be pushed for a change.”

“This session, for me was
the best one, but that’s probably because of several really simple factors.

1. I didn't give up half way through the swim session this time.
2. I missed the second one due to work
3. The weather you put on for this one was great!
4. The people there yesterday were a really good mixture and in each of the sessions I found myself learning from other athletes too.

Doing the drills with others again is of real benefit and I always feel that having spent 30 odd years finding the easy way round things, that my body is pre-programmed to do this at any opportunity now! Seeing others do the drills and getting picked up on the things that I do badly just reinforces the things I know I do badly but struggle to put them right. Really good session, especially with Carl the Physio there too.

The bike session was great because of the different sizes and abilities of the people there. I rode a lot with Chris B yesterday and that felt really good to do. He probably didn't have to put much effort in but the ride for me was hard and very enjoyable. Seeing young Sam ride so smoothly was an eye-opener (his pedal action is so smooth) and riding with James was an exhibition in brute force going up Oxton Bank. Things for me to learn from all of them I'm sure and things to work on on our Mondays too.

The Swim couldn't have worked out better, with the right number of people in the lanes and a chance to push myself really hard (especially in the 400) against Simon. Neither of us wanting to be beaten by the other! It was really interesting watching the super fast swimmers in the water and hearing you comment on hand positions and kicking to others and I'll try to incorporate more of these techniques into my swim.

I think that the session really benefited from having Carl the Physio there early doors and having the right number of people at all the sessions. I think that the nutrition speaker will be really beneficial too and I will forward some questions to you for her in advance of the next meet. Other things like the breaks between the sessions giving us a chance to have a coffee and a sarney are really good too.”

“I think that these sessions are really useful, although absolutely tiring!, I really enjoy them. It's great to get chance to train with similar athletes and see the kind of levels I would like to be at.

I especially think the chance to get more focus from yourself and to see Carl and any other people that can help us out is really advantageous.

The swim session is great as it really pushes me and swimming is an area I really want to improve. The bike ride is also brilliant as it gives me a chance to ride with people who are a higher standard than me.”
